The Reformer

What is the Reformer?

The Reformer is a large piece of Pilates equipment that was designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1930s. The design has changed a little over the years but remains pretty true to his original.

We have one reformer in our studio - this was specially made for us by Balanced Body in Sacramento. The Reformer consists of a wooden frame with a carriage on wheels that can slide up and down. The carriage is attached to a different number of springs which provide variable resistance, allowing clients to slowly build up strength and flexibility. Use of the reformer can help you to gain postural alignment, good core stability and an excellent overall muscular awareness.

Benefits of the Reformer

The Reformer provides the following benefits:

- adjustable resistance that can be set to suit an individual's needs, allowing for a more challenging set of exercises and greater control of progression through the exercises to an advanced level

- much greater strength and awareness than with matwork exercises by working in a closed chain for leg alignment and spinal posture

-easier feel and correction of muscle imbalances and poor biomechanics compared to mat work exercises.

- easier control, awareness and strengthening of core stability - reducing the tension of the springs instead of increasing them can create a greater challenge and help maintain good core stability in many cases

- greatly enhances your awareness and understanding of your own body, achieving much faster results compared with mat work exercises

- offers advanced exercises that can become highly aerobic and challenging
