About Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a body conditioning method that targets deep postural muscles to encourage proper movement, alignment and muscle balance. A lot of attention is paid to strengthening the deep stabilising muscles of the stomach and back to enable smooth and efficient movement of the limbs. Once a strong centre can be maintained, the exercises are advanced.

Body awareness is increased by bringing together mind and body - Pilates teaches you to be in control of your body, allowing you to handle stress more effectively and achieve relaxation more easily. This awareness will flow through into your everyday life, and you will find yourself thinking of posture and alignment when at work, walking and even waiting for a bus!

Who is Pilates for?

Anybody! Pilates can benefit people of all ages and fitness levels. It is especially recommended for those who suffer from poor posture, back pain, sports injuries, repetitive strain injury, osteoporosis or osteoarthritis.

What are the benefits of pilates?

- A longer, leaner and more toned appearance
- Improved posture
- Stress and tension relief
- Flatter stomach
- Stronger centre and back
- Improved balance and coordination
- Greater strength and flexibility
- Reduction of risk of injury

Remedial Pilates

With an emphasis on maintaining correct alignment and posture and increasing the body's core strength with minimal impact on joints, Pilates is an especially beneficial form of remedial exercise. A regular Pilates program can help to regain proper movement patterns, correct imbalances and alleviate symptoms that can occur following injury, back pain, surgery or conditions such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Pilates should not be used as a substitute for initial diagnosis and treatment from a qualified medical professional, but once you are on the road to recovery Pilates studio equipment is perfect for rebuilding strength, increasing flexibility and improving the mobility of your joints.

At the Little Pilates Studio, we work in consultation with your healthcare practitioner to offer the best program for you. You will begin with one-to-one sessions and may then progress to studio sessions or classes when ready.
